Donburi with a side of Kaizen – Wagamama Ezdan Mall

I’ve always liked Wagamama dishes (except for the ramen) especially their curry. So, imagine my happiness when I was invited there way back for the launch of their revamped menu, following the guidelines of Kaizen. But what is it? To make it short, Kaizen is the practice of continuous improvement.  By incorporating it in their restaurants, they have minimized the menu to the bare essential info , making it less confusing what to order. And the new food offerings, I must say, are delicious. Here are some of the highlights of that night: Their starters: edamame, gyoza, mushroom onigiri and chili squid. The mains: Teriyaki donburi (my favorite!). Look at all that food 🙂 The steamed hirata bun. This one is amazing, I can eat ten of it in one go.  The desserts: Banana katsu: my ultimate favorite dessert from Wagamama. The chocolate wasabi cake. It was good but I can barely taste the wasabi in it.  So, if you don’t have any ideas on where to eat this weekend, why not head over to …

Cheap Eats Review: Tofu House – Bin Mahmoud (near the Indian Supermarket)

My eldest sister is a big fan of everything Korean; soap opera, food, appliances, skincare, anything you can think of! So, it wasn’t a wonder that she has been urging me to visit Tofu House for quite some time now, and we finally got the chance last week. Located at one of the old towns of Doha, the restaurant looks non-descript and blends perfectly with the shops beside it. Except for the large signage bearing its name, you can easily pass it by.  The place is small with only one table on the ground floor and sits about 30 persons max at the 1st floor. And boy, it was packed! We were the 4th in queue and there were about 5 after us. It’s good though, a packed place mostly means that they have a patronage which also means they serve good food. It’s bad because the waiting time is bound to make you cranky. We finally got our turn to sit and wasted no time ordering. Food was served within 15 mins., which was …

Review: Lunch Buffet at Maison de Sushi – 01 Mall, Abu Hamour

Tucked at the 2nd level corner of 01 Mall, lies Maison de Sushi. With the striking Japanese design and tubular aquarium with cheesy but cutesy fake fishes and plants at the entrance, you will definitely not miss seeing this restaurant.  Once you step in, you will be immediately greeted by the staff in their Japanese kimono. The design of the place left me mildly shocked (in a good way) as I wouldn’t have thought that this is inside a mall and beside a food court. Hanging wisteria-like paper flowers, lamps ( a lot of them) covered the whole ceiling. Then there’s this massive painting spanning the whole length of the wall. I think it was made for this restaurant as the paper mats have the same drawings. Their attention to details is shown with how they decorated the tables with cast iton teapots, carved chairs, tablewares, etc.  I had the chance to speak with the owner of the restaurant as he was making rounds on the tables and he said that he wanted to merge …

Quick  and Cheap Eats: Thai Smile – 1st. Flr. Lulu Hypermarket Barwa City

Ordered food: Seafood Tom Yum    Yam Nuer (Spicy beef salad) Seafood Pad Seeiew (Rice noodles with Thai soy sauce)    Lychee Iced Tea and Milk Iced Tea   Overall review: The taste of the food is just okay. Nothing special but tasty enough for us not to feel bad that we ate here. Price:  Returning? Meh, most probably as it is one of the nearest restaurants that’s not a fast food chain.

Splurge Eats: Sky Lounge at The Torch Doha – 51st Flr.

Mr. Qatar Eats and I had a long day fixing our kitchen today and it was in a total state of mess, which meant no cooking will be done.  And with couple’s usual fashion of “what-do-we-eat” question and “I-don’t-know-you-choose” answer, we both agreed to try the sushi night (no buffet) at the Sky Lounge. We arrived at the 51st floor thru connecting elevator rides (you stop at 47th flr and transit to the next elevator). I got quite confused for a moment as we stepped out and thought I had to enter thru a curtained door (which was the fire exit 😒) as there was no reception area at the entrance. Finally found a staff who attended to us immediately and seated us at the smoking area.    Food Review We ordered Crispy Tuna Roll, California Maki, Smoked Salmon and Shrimp Nigiri (left plate) and Tuna and Salmon Sashimi (right plate).     The sushi rolls and nigiri were so-so in flavor. I mean, it’s okay but as I mentioned to one person, there was no …

Cheap Eats: The Rice Room – Gulf Mall Food Court

Finally! A “mainstream” Vietnamese restaurant has opened in Qatar! You don’t have to go to hotel for this one. The best part? It’s cheap and fresh. I must say that the idea of this restaurant has got me excited and cautious at the same time. Is it going to be a good one? I had to find out as soon as I learned that it was open. So, I asked (i.e. dragged) one of my friends to join me in this foodieventure. Ordered Food Goi cuon shrimp (Fresh rice paper rolls with veggies with hoi sin sauce)    The rolls were good, it has a nice crunch to it and the sauce binds the flavors of the veggies. The only side comment about it is that they are very small, like two slim fingers. And if you look closely, you can almost see that there’s apparently a shrimp 😀 Go du du voi Bo (Green papaya salad with beef and peanuts)    Hands down, this salad takes the trophy out of our order. It has …

Qatar Eats Cooks Ginataang Kalabasa (Pumpkin cooked in coconut milk)

Hey y’all, how ya doin’?! Here’s Filipino recipe that I really love for its simplicity  and deliciousness. Ginataang kalabasa means ginataan meaning “cooked in coconut milk” and kalabasa meaning “pumpkin”. You can use any type of protein to accompany the veggies, I used clams and shrimps for this one. Ingredients: 1 onion, minced 4 cloves garlic, minced 1/2 medium sized pumpkin, skinned and cubed 1 medium sized eggplant, chopped 1 bitter gourd, sliced (optional) 250 grams, peeled shrimp 250 grams, clams 4 tbsp. fish sauce (or you can use salt) 1 200ml. can coconut milk Pepper Instructions: Heat oil in a cooking pot. Sauté half of the garlic and onion with the clams first. After 5 mins, put the shrimps until half-cooked. Transfer into a plate and set aside. 3. In the same pot, sauté the remaining onion and garlic until it loses its color. Add the all the pumpkin. Reduce the heat and cover the pot. 4. Once the pumpkin is soft yet firm, add the coconut milk, pepper, fish sauce and the remaining …

Qatar Eats Cooks Tom Yum Yum Yummy!

So, working hard takes its toll on my stomach.  I get so h(a)ngry by the end of the day that I start craving all sorts of food.  Tonight, I just wanted something to soothe my tired soul.  And what better way to do that than with a nice hot bowl of soup. But nothing too heavy in this! It has to be light and heavy at the same time (d’ya get what I mean?) Well, tom yum is the answer. I got the recipe from this website and boy, oh boy, it was as authentic as you can get.
