Recipe: Chocolate Crinkles

It’s just one of those many days that I want chocolate. Like really want it. But not just any chocolate will do.  I want the soft, sugary and soothing crinkles.  It’s like love when you see it. Smell it.  Taste it. *Drool* I have found many variations of how to make crinkles but this one that I’m sharing now has been formulated by yours truly (from my old blog) to make it quick and easy. It works, I promise.  The only tricky part here is mixing the dough (that is if you do not have an electric mixer) as it can get very, very sticky. Chocolate Crinkles Ingredients 1 cup unsweetened dark cocoa powder 2 cups white sugar 1/2 cup sunflower oil or any vegetable oil 4 eggs 2 teaspoons vanilla extract 2 cups all-purpose flour 2 teaspoons baking powder 1/2 teaspoon salt Confectioners’ sugar (for coating) Directions: 1. Mix the cocoa, white sugar, and vegetable oil. Beat in eggs one at a time, and then stir in the vanilla. Add the flour, baking powder, …

Qatar Summer Festival 2016

In the peak of the summer heatwave, everyone is scurrying to leave the GCC for cooler climates. For those of us who have to stay, what is left us to do? Are we destined to while away our life until winter or do some sort of hibernation? Fret not! This month is the holds the annual summer festival in the state.  They have games, food stalls and fun programs at the Entertainment City to keep you and your loved ones busy and active. Held at the Doha Exhibition Convention Center, just minutes away from malls, hotels, park and the indomitable Doha Corniche, you’ll be sure to have a variety of places to go before and after your fun at the carnivale-like atmosphere of the Entertainment City. They have awesome rides for children and adults alike, arcade, go kart, karaoke, a multitude of bouncy castles and lots, lots more! I had as much fun as my daughter and niece from roaming around and playing some games. Especially the go kart😊. Aside from that, QSF has partnered up …

Cheap Eats Review: Tofu House – Bin Mahmoud (near the Indian Supermarket)

My eldest sister is a big fan of everything Korean; soap opera, food, appliances, skincare, anything you can think of! So, it wasn’t a wonder that she has been urging me to visit Tofu House for quite some time now, and we finally got the chance last week. Located at one of the old towns of Doha, the restaurant looks non-descript and blends perfectly with the shops beside it. Except for the large signage bearing its name, you can easily pass it by.  The place is small with only one table on the ground floor and sits about 30 persons max at the 1st floor. And boy, it was packed! We were the 4th in queue and there were about 5 after us. It’s good though, a packed place mostly means that they have a patronage which also means they serve good food. It’s bad because the waiting time is bound to make you cranky. We finally got our turn to sit and wasted no time ordering. Food was served within 15 mins., which was …

Review: Lunch Buffet at Maison de Sushi – 01 Mall, Abu Hamour

Tucked at the 2nd level corner of 01 Mall, lies Maison de Sushi. With the striking Japanese design and tubular aquarium with cheesy but cutesy fake fishes and plants at the entrance, you will definitely not miss seeing this restaurant.  Once you step in, you will be immediately greeted by the staff in their Japanese kimono. The design of the place left me mildly shocked (in a good way) as I wouldn’t have thought that this is inside a mall and beside a food court. Hanging wisteria-like paper flowers, lamps ( a lot of them) covered the whole ceiling. Then there’s this massive painting spanning the whole length of the wall. I think it was made for this restaurant as the paper mats have the same drawings. Their attention to details is shown with how they decorated the tables with cast iton teapots, carved chairs, tablewares, etc.  I had the chance to speak with the owner of the restaurant as he was making rounds on the tables and he said that he wanted to merge …

Emirgan Sütis – Al Emadi Bldg., C-Ring Road

Turkish restaurants in Qatar are a dozen a dime. It ranges from the quick and cheap eats to high-end restaurants. With so many to choose from, I think Emirgan Sütis’ edge is that it’s in the heart of the city and being mid-priced that it is, you can expect a very decent meal and a nice ambiance. And the good food helps as well. The place is decorated nicely plus they have an outdoor sitting ( non-smoking though) with cute fairy lights. We were to late to try their iftar menu, so we went for their a la carte. Unfortunately, there were no more of the Iskander and Doner Kebab  as it was the one offered in the iftar set. Food ordered Ayran I love, love this drink! It’s so refreshing; salty and creamy. It cleanses my palate and prepares it for the incoming food. Plus they serve it in these very cute aluminum cups that’s just so photo-ready.  Cold mezzeh (ordered separately) The baba ghanoush had the right smokines to it, which for me, …

Lo Spaghetto – Al Sadd, Doha

Coming from a rather long and tiring wait from the doctor’s clinic for my husband’s check up, I suggested for us to have our very late iftar at Lo Spaghetto, which is just right around the corner of Toys R’ Us at Al Sadd St. As hubby was about to pass out from the extended fasting, this was the nearest place we could immediately go to.  The new location of the restaurant is quite deceiving as it doesn’t show much from the outside. But, lo (Spaghetto. Pun intended, sorry) and behold! Once you get it in, it’s an entirely different universe. Rustic yet chic interiors, inside seating is quite spacious and beautiful but what the place can really brag about is the garden seating. It’s like someone’s backyard; trellis and panels with hanging bougainvilleas, and lots of plants. I haven’t seen such a restaurant right in the heart of Doha (except for Chef’s Garden but it is in the outskirts Of the city). It kinda made me miss my home back in Manila. Food ordered: …

High Tea: Gourmet House at Kempinski Residences and Suites, West Bay

My elder sister and I finally found the time to hang out and chill. And being sisters, when we say “bonding”, we mean eating. But the question was: buffet or a la carte? Being that 4PM was too early for dinner and we just had lunch, we decided to go for a high tea at Gourmet House.  The interior of the café was tastefully done, it gives you a feeling of space eventhough it’s just a small area.        And the food displays were a sight for the hungry eyes.         We ordered the set for 2 and didn’t know what to expect.  According to the menu, it includes two of either tea or coffee and a three-tier tray of finger sandwiches, cakes and pastries. Sounds promising already. It took a while to bring food but it was a sight to behold.  The cakes and sandwiches were really good and it was a lot more for two people. Another thing, their hot drinks are free-flowing. Price-wise, you’d be hard-pressed to find a high …

New menu tasting at Tamarind Indian – Lagoona Mall

I was lucky enough to get invited to another new menu tasting, now by the amazing Doaa of Hungry Birds Doha, partnered with Lifestyle Restaurants.  Located at the restaurant strip of Lagoona Mall, Tamarind Indian is small but with a posh design that gives the look of spaciousness. We were greeted by Sumit, Head of Marketing for Lifestyle Restaurants, who also handles other restaurants like Burger Gourmet, Copacabana, Royal Indian and much more.  I had the happy chance of seeing these lovely ladies; Gopika of Gop’s Gourmet , Manju of , Gayathri of The Veggie Patch Lady, Khamsa of Creativity with Kay, Inez of Inez_Qatar , Kim of Mama Baba Ghanoush, the fashion squad of Inez of Inez_Qatar, Allyson and Karen of Life with Karlly.I also got to meet new ladies; Sahr of The Oryx Land Life.  We started with the tasting menu presentation and boy it was a long one.   And now, the food pics in order of the menu:                             And yes, they look as good as they …

Sushi Rolls – Oishi Doha (Made to Order)

Another short review here. I happen to chance upon Oishi Doha’s FB page. They make made-to-order sushi rolls and they have five flavors available:  California Maki Kani- Avocado Maki Shrimp – Kani with Mango roll Shrimp Teriyaki Tempura  Spicy Shrimp Maki Krab Tempura Maki Prices:  20 pcs – 2 flavors – 60 Qr 30 pcs – 3 flavors -90 QR 40 pcs- 4 flavors -120 QR 50 pcs – 5 flavors 150 QR I ordered 3 flavors (Spicy Shrimp, California Maki, Shrimp Kani with Mango) and all of them were tasty.  Overall Review: The sushi rolls are quite good, like the ones that you can get from the ususal Japanese restaurants. For the price, I would say that it is worth it, 10 pieces for QR30.  Customer service: They don’t do deliveries however, as they located in Mansoura, it won’t be a hassle for most people to pick up their orders. Returning? Yes, I’ll definitely order again. Here’s their FB page: https://www.facebook.com/pages/Oishi-Doha/628018547265306

The French Olive – Barwa Al Sadd

Overall Review Located in one of the busiest streets of Doha, this restaurant still curiously makes you feel as if it’s hidden away outside of the city. And once you step inside, it just gets better. From the gorgeous tree trunk table as a centre piece of the interior decór to the floor tile patterns, everything whispers elegance without overwhelming guests.   Now for the food. What can I say? When you go to a beautiful restaurant, you automatically expect to be served visually and gustatory stimulating food. And boy, they didn’t disappoint! Every food item was a star on their own right. Perfectly cooked, delicately  seasoned, plated beautifully. Although the prices are a bit steep, I felt that it was definitely worth it for a special occassion or just random foodie splurge. Food Ordered: Arancini (Deep Fried Rice Balls) It was heavy enough to be enjoyed as a main course. Crunchy on the outside, soft rice, cheese, and mushroom inside.      Calamari Fritti Just your usual fried squid. I mean you can’t go wrong with it …
