Review – Quick and Cheap Eats: Shades Café and Eatery (Doha Tower, West Bay)

I had a scheduled brunch date with my friend, whom we shall call Miss Independent, and was racking my brain on which restaurant should I bring her to. My criteria were: Somewhere quiet Preferably with a view of nature Somewhere with shaded outdoor seats Reasonably priced It was no mean feat, with the multitudes of restaurants that meet most or all of the above. As I was thinking about it, I checked my schedule for the day and saw that I had to meet with Ms. Hala later in the afternoon. Then, I remembered one Zomato Meet-up (in Qatar, Ms. Hala is synonymous to Zomato and vice versa) invite a few months back (which I wasn’t able to attend) at this little place with a garden view called Shades Café and Eatery located at the Doha Tower (you know, that infamous bullet-shaped tower). So off we went. Parking was a bit of a problem, so we had to leave the car somewhere and walk our way to the café. We arrived and the place, oh the place.  The only thing missing were the sounds …

Lo Spaghetto – Al Sadd, Doha

Coming from a rather long and tiring wait from the doctor’s clinic for my husband’s check up, I suggested for us to have our very late iftar at Lo Spaghetto, which is just right around the corner of Toys R’ Us at Al Sadd St. As hubby was about to pass out from the extended fasting, this was the nearest place we could immediately go to.  The new location of the restaurant is quite deceiving as it doesn’t show much from the outside. But, lo (Spaghetto. Pun intended, sorry) and behold! Once you get it in, it’s an entirely different universe. Rustic yet chic interiors, inside seating is quite spacious and beautiful but what the place can really brag about is the garden seating. It’s like someone’s backyard; trellis and panels with hanging bougainvilleas, and lots of plants. I haven’t seen such a restaurant right in the heart of Doha (except for Chef’s Garden but it is in the outskirts Of the city). It kinda made me miss my home back in Manila. Food ordered: …

Lazy Eats: “Un-classic” Tiramisu

My husband and I were supposed to share a Victoria cake slice that I got from Megamart yesterday. Until my friend saw and devoured it before I could blink. So now, we had a dilemna: both of us are now hankering for something sweet. But since our oven is still not fixed, baking is not an option. Here comes tiramisu to the rescue. Easy enough but I, however, am not confident preparing raw eggs. So, instead I thought of using bananas. Hey, if you can make pancakes out of bananas then for sure you can use it for tiramisu, right? (I may or may not have had my fingers crossed while repeating this to myself prior to preparing it). Without further ado, here’s the recipe: Makes 2 layers of a 9″ square pan Prep time: 20 mins Chilling time: 6 hours Ingredients: 250 ml thick cream, chilled 100 grams granulated sugar 2 bananas, mashed 350 ml mascarpone, softened 350 ml espresso or very strong black coffee, cooled 35-40 Italian brand lady fingers  (Italian brand because …
